Legend has it that in 1380 a Carthusian prior on Capri gathered the island’s loveliest flowers into a bouquet for a visiting queen — and found an unknown scent left behind in the water. True or not, in 1948 the old monastery formulas were revived, and Carthusia has been made ever since in what the house calls “the smallest perfumery in the world” — still on Capri, still by hand. The scents draw on the island itself: rosemary from Monte Solaro, the wild Capri carnation. Mediterranean, sun-warmed, unmistakably Capri.
