Few bars of soap are so beautifully dressed. Claus Porto — founded in Porto in 1887 by the German soap-makers Ferdinand Claus and Georges Schweder — still wraps its triple-milled bars by hand, in thick, gold-embossed paper drawn from its own archive of more than a century of Belle Époque and Art Deco design. It’s still made in Portugal. You buy a bar of soap and get a small artwork with it — almost too good to unwrap.
