In 1870, William Penhaligon, a barber from Cornwall, opened his shop on London’s Jermyn Street — right next door to a Turkish bath. From its scented steam he composed his first perfume, Hammam Bouquet, in 1872. Royal warrants and classics such as Blenheim Bouquet followed, and today there are also the Portraits, each with an animal head on its cap.
