The Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner is regarded as the founder of modern zoology. A true scholar of the 16th century, he was also a physician, botanist, linguist — and an adventurous cave explorer.
In 1555 he described the caves of the Alps: “At night the moon shines so brightly into the cave that the light itself seems to take shape, like mist. It gathers on the ceiling and sets the limestone stalactites shimmering and gleaming, weeping white drops into pools on the rock that never dry. Moonmilk.”
