Legend has it that in 1380 a Carthusian prior on Capri gathered the island’s most beautiful flowers into a bouquet for a queen — and discovered an unknown fragrance in the water left behind. In 1948 the old monastery recipes were revived. Since then, Carthusia has been made in a small laboratory on Capri and bottled there by hand. The fragrances draw on the island itself: rosemary from Monte Solaro, the wild Capri carnation.
